The Parish Church of Looe, Cornwall
The Parish Church of Looe, Cornwall
Looe benefits from two parish churches. Both the parish church of St. Martin's in East Looe and St. Nicholas Church in West Looe. These happy and vibrant congregations welcome visitors to all services. Our Church family also holds a number of social and fund raising events. St Martins Church holds Holy Communion services at 11am every Sunday which holiday visitors are welcome to attend.
Under the brow of the hill sheltered from the wind off the sea, stands St Martin's Church which is cruciform in shape, built of local stone and roofed like many Cornish buildings with slate.
The Church has a lovely tower with a peal of six bells. The well proportioned Norman doorway with its deep mouldings probably dates from about 1140. The interior of the Church is of a typically 15th century appearance with chancel, nave, south aisle and two transepts, but parts of the building are much older.
Holy Communion services and a monthly Family Praise Service are held at the Church on Sundays
A Sunday School is held to coincide with Holy Communion. The adjacent Church Hall is home to the exuberant Sunday At Ten services which are held at 10 am on Sundays. The Church Hall is available to hire for functions and benefits from ample parking.
Contractors began the restoration of St Martin's Church roof in September 2005. This work has now been successfully completed. The Church has also been rewired as part of this Restoration Programme.
