Looe Island Cornwall

Looe Island is a beautiful island, situated 1 mile off the south Cornwall coast, by Looe.  It is a natural sanctuary for all kinds of flora and fauna; with birds and plants taking advantage of the unusually mild and temperate climate. It is also known as St George's Island and, further back through the generations, St Michael's Island.

The history of the island is varied with the remains of an old Benedictine chapel built in 1139 AD competing with the old haunts of smugglers. According to local myth and legend, Joseph of Arimathea landed in a boat on the shore of the island, carrying the child Jesus Christ.

The island is normally only accessible by boat, but on a couple of days a year the tides are low enough for the crossing to be made on foot across the sea floor from Looe. For holiday cottages in Looe, visit the Looe and Polperro holidays website at www.looeandpolperroholidays.co.uk/
